Converting laser radiation into heat on the surface of the skin comprises: (a) coating the skin with a "chromophore"-containing composition whose absorbence at the laser emission wavelength is such that light transmitted into the skin causes no undesired irreversible tissue or cell damage; and (b) exposing the skin to laser radiation.
