Reducing nitrogen oxide(s) and black smoke in diesel engine exhaust gases

Process for reducing nitrogen oxides and black smoke in diesel engine exhaust gases comprising spraying water into the combustion chamber of the diesel engine (50). The water being sprayed is obtained from the exhaust gas of the diesel engine. Water vapour from the exhaust gas stream is removed through a porous membrane (5) into gas chamber (4) limited by the membrane (5) and a cooling surface (7). The water vapour is condensed in the gas chamber (4). An appts. for carrying out the process is also claimed comprising a porous membrane (5), a gas chamber (4) and a cooling device.
