The invention relates to a retarder control system for commercial vehicles, comprising a drive engine (2) to which is connected a multi-speed gearbox (6), whereby driving and braking torques can be transmitted between the drive engine (2) and multi-speed gearbox (6), and a retarder (8) which is located on the secondary side, actuated with a control device (28) and able to generate braking torque during descents. The control device (28) controls the retarder (8) in such a way that the lower braking torque occurring between the engine (2) and the gearbox (6) during gear changes in the gearbox (6), in particular when the clutch (4) is opened, is compensated for by a greater breaking torque generated by the retarder (8).
