The lens for the vehicle headlamp unit has reference points machined into the edges and on the underside facing the reflector. The reference points are gripped by positioning jigs (7 to 11) to hold the lens in an accurate alignment w.r.t. the reflector housing while the bonding agent sets. The reference points can be simple flats machined into two of the edges, with two points on one edge and one on an adjacent edge. The reference points determine the spacing of the lens edges from the mounting points in the vehicle. The reference points on the underside of the lens align the lens for focusing,
