The system has an injector housing (100) contains a fuel feed passage (108) led through one side between top (102) and bottom (104) ends. The housing has a central recess (110) at a second point, which, together with the fuel feed passage, defines a fuel chamber (113) at a first level. A first fuel injection passage (116) in a third housing position is selectively connected at its inlet (118) to the fuel chamber at a second level and has an outlet (120). A second fuel injection passage (122) is connected at its inlet (124) to the fuel chamber at a third level and has an outlet (126), which is of greater diameter than the first injection passage. A first nozzle group (121) near the housing bottom is connected to the first injection passage outlet. A second nozzle group (128) adjoining the bottom end of the housing is connected to the second passage outlet. An interrupter (130) with an actuator (132) and a valve (131) controls the connection of the injection passage inlets to the fuel chamber as a function of the engine load.
