Building materials consisting mainly of Mg- and Ca oxides and C, esp. refractory bricks for steel furnaces pref. contg. 0.5-4 wt.% CaC2, are made by shaping dolomite and/or magnesite raw material in sintered condition and subsequently firing ceramically in a reducing atmos. esp. at 1500-1800 (1600-1700) degrees C, which reduces the oxde fluxes usually present in raw material, esp. 10 wt.% Fe2O3, 4 wt.% SiO2 and/or 4 wt.% Al2O3, to the metal and metal carbides, volatilise Si as SiO and convert small amount of CaO to CaC2.
|
