Unidirectional band of parallel high strength fibres

To produce a unidirectional layer of parallel high strength fibres, the lateral bonding filaments (11) of the bonding web (10) have their adhesion activated by heat while moving with the fibre band (5) and/or after, to start bonding with the high power fibres (2) in the band (5). When the heat is removed, they continue to bond together durably, so that the high strength fibres (2) are locked in place in the band (5) next to each other across it. Also claimed is an apparatus where the flat band (5) of parallel fibres (2) are deflected before coming to the bonding web (10) to prevent side reassertion. The deflector has a curved laying profile with a smooth sliding surface, such as a tensioning roller, so that the band of fibres (5) passes round the deflector under tension.
