The mechanism has a lock case which contains a worm shaft (12) and a motor (13) and is driven on a fixed longitudinal axis (A1) and meshes with a wheel (16) capable of longitudinal and rotational movement. The wheel is supported by a bearing (26) sliding in a slot (30) in the case side (20), parallel to the shaft, and by the locking boss (24) which, sliding in a parallel slot (36) in the opposing side (18), initially prevents rotation. The wheel therefore travels along the worm till the boss enters a generally circular end window (38). Translational motion ceases and the wheel rotates until the boss meets a stop face (46) projecting into the window. The wheel's square output shaft (22) carries e.g. a cam (60) actuating the column's immobiliser. |
