The stapler has an anvil arm (14) carrying an anvil plate (10) in its front region. The staple magazine (22) is in the rear region of the anvil arm. The driver arm (22) carries a driver engaging in the head part of the staple magazine and can turn about a transverse axis (16). The anvil arm has a plate receiver (88) with a seating surface (86) for the anvil plate. The plate receiver has an anvil carrier (92) which can be moved along or turned against the force of a return spring (90). The anvil carrier may be connected to the anvil arm on one side or made in one with it.
