The apparatus modifies the design of a channel wall which is curved and at least partly transparent. The wall is so modified that it acts as a neutral lens (3). The outer contour (1) of the wall, within a compensating area (9), is at an increased distance from the inner contour (2), i.e. giving a thicker wall on the same optical axis (oA). Light rays (A,B,C) which fall on the channel wall parallel to the optical axis give rise to focal points (F1,F2) which are parallel, so that the focal width is infinite. Flow through the channel can therefore be seen without the use of additional lenses.
