PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a ceramic compact, having functions to oxidatively decompose a nitrogen oxide under irradiation of light and excellent in mechanical strength, heat and weather resistances, sound absorbing properties, etc., by superposing a mixture having photooxidation catalyst functions on the front surface or/and the back surface of a ceramic raw material composition so as to constitute a skin layer and then forming and baking the resultant superposed material. SOLUTION: A mixture comprising an active titanium oxide having photooxidation functions and an inorganic consolidating agent (preferably an aluminum primary phosphate-based inorganic consolidating agent) is superposed on the front surface or/and the back surface of a substrate part composed of a ceramic raw material composition containing coal ash and the inorganic consolidating agent consisting essentially of the aluminum primary phosphate so as to constitute a skin layer having <=2mm thickness. The superposed material is then press formed and baked at 250-600 deg.C to produce a ceramic compact having the skin layer having photooxidation catalyst functions as an integral structure. |
