PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surfactant composition having high detergency and excellent handleability by subjecting an alcohol to random addition reaction with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to give a compound having a specified molecular weight and mixing the compound with water to provide a viscosity below a specified value. SOLUTION: A 10-15C alcohol such as lauryl alcohol is subjected to random addition reaction with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to give a compound having an average molecular weight of at most 1,000 and represented by formula I [wherein R is a 10-15C alkyl, etc.; EO is oxyethylene; PO is oxypropylene; x1 >1, and x2 >0, provided that x1 +x2 <7.5; and y1 >0, and y2 >0, provided that y1 +y2 =(0.5 to 4.5)]. This compound is mixed with water at a prescribed ratio to give a surfactant composition of which the content of the compound and the content of water satisfy the relations of formula II and formula III [wherein n is alkyl, etc.; y=y1 +y2 ; and C=Wa/(Wa+Wb)×100 (wherein Wa is the content of the compound, and Wb is the content of water)] and which has a viscosity (25 deg.C) of at most 1,000cP. The addition of an anionic surfactant, etc., to this composition can further improve the detergency.
