1310616 Irradiation apparatus ATOMENERGIKOMMISSIONEN 13 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 23215/70 Heading H5R Matter to be irradiated-e.g. circulating blood-is introduced into a curved duct (5, Fig. 1, not shown) of an irradiation apparatus by use of an elongate band which is pressure-resistant in the longitudinal direction but flexible in a transverse direction, and is provided with holder members for the receipt of tubular containers-e.g. a continuous pipe, or one or more test-tubes-whereby the band may be thrust into the duct with a rapier-like action. The arrangement shown employs a pair of stainless steel bands 7 and 8, the tapered end 14 of band 7 projecting into a slit formed in the curved end of band 8 at the end 12, such that the composite structure is, in Fig. 3, flexible in the plane of the paper. The bipartite handle 9, 10-which may be provided with a scale for indicating the dose for different depths of insertions within the duct-is readily disassemblable to permit the introduction between the bands of a silicone rubber tube 19 which is mounted within and around the holder members 15, 16, and 17 secured to the band 8. The tube may be repeatedly coiled around the pins 16 to give a desired number of passes of the fluid through the radiation field; a number of different tubes may be mounted between the bands to permit the simultaneous treatment of different fluid samples; the tube may be of rectangular crosssection to spread the liquid out in a direction perpendicular to the radiation; and the portion of the tube which, in use, enters the radiation field may be replaced by a cast unit having ducts formed therein. Reference is made to the possibility of dispensing with the protective band 7. |
