New microbiological method (I) of treating the surface of a material comprises putting a material (II), which is either naturally fermentable or has been made fermentable, in contact with one or more micro-organisms (III) which produce useful functional groups via fermentation, possibly followed by the chemical transformation (IV) of these functional groups. Also claimed is a method (V) of preparing a packaging comprising mixing a powder or fibres of a natural material, to the surface of which alginate groups have been added by (I), with a latex-type elastomer, a substance derived from algae and possibly a stiffener (VI), and a plasticiser, in the presence of a hardener (VII). Also claimed are film and paper (VIII) obtained from a natural material to the surface of which a resistant layer has been added by (I). Also claimed are rough packaging materials (IX) prepared by treating a rough material comprising (II). Also claimed are packaging materials prepared by (V).
