A device for identifying objects has a rolling part (21) provided with identifying means (22) and linked to a holding part (11, 14), and an actuating device with driving means for rolling the rolling part (21) with respect to the object placed between a support (1) and the rolling part (21) so that the identifying means (22) contact an identifying area of the object. The identifying means (22) are brought into contact with the identifying area by driving means (12) that act perpendicularly to the identifying area at least in one direction. The holding part (11, 14) has a roll surface (16) which supports the rolling part (21) when the identifying means (22) contact the identifying area, and the roll surface (16) progressively rises against the identifying area in the rolling direction (20). A shearing force that acts in the rolling direction (20) when the driving means (12) are actuated is thus generated and automatically moves the rolling part (21). In a particularly preferred embodiment, a restoring force generated by a restoring element (30) acts against the shearing force and enables the rolling process to be controlled.
