The cross member comprises a crossbar (22) permanently tied into the chassis frame and has a space for a netting partition or rollable boot cover (24) and/or airbag as load barrier. The crossbar (22) is also fitted with headrests (23) and/or seatbelt fittings and/or seat back locking elements. The crossbar (22) is hydro-formed with moulded flanges and/or mounts and/or openings for respective fittings, and is screwed to the bearing structure notably by pins on the structure screwed to sleeves fitted to the ends of the crossbar (22). The crossbar is fixed with its ends on or in front of a wheel housing cover secured to the chassis frame. The crossbar is releasably and switchably joined with its mounts behind or in the upper part of the rear seat (12) and can be inserted between the B or D columns in mounts provided. The crossbar is fitted with its inbuilt parts into the finish-painted chassis frame.
