This invention relates to a process for making a first and a second plurality of fully oriented multifilament yarns (80) on a fully oriented yarn spinning machine. This process comprises spinning a plurality of filaments (30) from a spin pack (25) containing a spinneret plate; cooling the filaments (30) in a quench chimney (25); applying finish on the filaments (30) and converging the filaments (30) into a first and a second plurality of multifilament yarns (80); and drawing the first plurality of the multifilament yarns (80) with a first stepped roll assembly (90) and drawing the second plurality of the multifilament yarns (80) with a second stepped roll assembly (90) to increase their length by a fixed amount. The multifilament yarns (80) from the stepped roll assemblies (90) are heated by applying steam to the multifilament yarns (80) from a steam relax unit (100) between the first and the second stepped roll assemblies (90); separation of the yarns (80) is maintained and the multifilament yarns (80) are directed; and the first and the second plurality of the multifilament yarns (80) are wound on a first and a second windup assembly (74a, 74b) into a first and a second plurality of packages (70). The invention includes apparatus for carrying out this process wherein a partially oriented yarn spinning machine is converted to a fully oriented yarn spinning machine.
