The method includes the steps of recording disturbance values in a number of revolutions of a crankshaft, calculating a distance between bands of disturbance values, and recording an additional exhaust fume-related size of the combustion engine. It is examined, whether the calculated band distance is smaller than a predetermined threshold distance and whether the exhaust fume-related size lies within a predetermined threshold interval, and if this is the case, this information is used as an indication, that the disturbances of the crank shaft are caused by an empty tank.
