Battery module e.g. based on commercial grade nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells for small earth-orbiting satellites

The battery module consists of a number of single cells E, such as nickel cadmium cells. Each cell is either plasma- or spot-welded to each adjacent cells. The cells may be welded together with intermediated rings of stainless steel. The cell arrangement is hermetically sealed using side cover plates U and end stoppers (S). The cover plates and end stoppers are formed of fibre reinforced plastics. The stoppers have inner screw threads for electrical contacts. several battery modules may be connected in parallel or in series.
