Preparation of lower alkyl esters (I) by catalytic ester exchange of fats and/or oils with alcohols is carried out in batches in a reactor with recycling through a coalescence separator. Also claimed is a stirred vessel with recirculation through a coalescence separator and its use in the process. A coalescence aid, especially wire, metal, glass fibre and/or synthetic fabric, is added. More catalyst is added during ester exchange.
