The invention concerns a novel process for the racemization of substituted 4-ketocarboxylic acids. The process represents a novel economic way of returning an inactive enantiomer to the synthesis sequence and hence considerably increasing the total yield. Substituted 4-ketocarboxylic acids, in particular substituted aryl and biaryl-4-ketocarboxylic acids, are inhibitors for enzymes in the matrix metalloproteinase class. The inhibiting of the above enzymes enables osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and metastases, for example, to be combated.
