The bassoon's main key (7) is operated by the right thumb opening and closing the note E. Two keys straddle the main key and operate the B flat and F sharp notes. Rollers (13,14) built into the edges of the main key, adjacent to the side keys enable the thumb to roll onto either side key. The side keys have rollers (19,20) built into the edges to provide a smooth sliding action for the thumb.
