Mixtures of di- and poly-glycols are produced by diluting with water the distillation residue obtained in the production of ethylene glycol from ethylene oxide and water, and removing from the diluted residue the impurities which separate. The mixture obtained contains mainly di- and triethylene glycol, the impurities removed being polymers which precipitate on addition of water and inorganic salts which separate when the water is subsequently distilled off. The glycol mixture, which initially has a high pH, may be used, after neutralization and bleaching if desired, to impregnate wood to reduce its shrinkage.ALSO:A mixture of glycols obtained as a distillation residue in the production of ethylene glycol from ethylene oxide and water is purified by diluting with water and removing the impurities which separate, and may then be used to impregnate fine wood to reduce shrinkage and prevent the formation of checks. The glycol mixture, which has a dark brown colour, may be bleached before use e.g. with hydrogen peroxide and may be used in association with a plastic binding agent, e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin.
|
