A sedimentation vessel (1, 1', 1") is used to test a sample of especially waste water (2) which is low on solids, to separate especially suspended solids (4) from the clear phase (3). The vessel (1, 1', 1") has a closed base (5) and an opening through which the sample (2) is introduced. A first tube (10, 18) through the top withdraws a portion of the sample from the liquid (2) upper clear phase (3). In the zone holding the suspended sediment particles, the vessel widens towards the base (5). The sedimentary zone (6) is essentially a truncated cone whose base is contiguous with the vessel (1, 1', 1") base (5). The clear sample is drawn from the clear phase (3) through a tube (10) projecting along the vessel (1, 1', 1") axial centreline.
