Sand drying and cleaning drum

A process for raw sand preparation and pretreatment, especially for use as mortar or concrete aggregate, for the ceramics and glass industries or for chemical uses, involves delivering the sand into a rotary drying drum, in which the sand is subjected to (a) initial ball milling depending on the particle size and contamination level; (b) subsequent exposure to a hot air stream and a diverging sand jet above a sieve for moisture removal and pre-cleaning; and (c) moisture content determination at the outlet side to allow the moisture content to be decreased or increased in accordance with the use of the sand and/or the subsequent sieving and/or dust removal operations. Also claimed is an apparatus for carrying out the above process.
