The housing includes a fluid flow chamber and respective inlet and outlet ports in communication with the flow chamber, and at least one displacement rotor rotatably mounted in the chamber. Each rotor has a rotor hub and at least one rotor blade extending axially along the hub and radially outward from the hub. The areas of each of the respective inlet and outlet ports are equal to the area swept by the hub and one blade of the displacement rotor. The improvement relates to the width of each of the inlet and the outlet ports, which is equal to the axially extending dimension of the displacement rotor blade and the cross-sectional height of each of the inlet and the outlet ports, equal to the radially extending dimension from the bottom of the hub to the axially extending edge of the displacement rotor blade. The inlet and outlet ports shaped similarly to swept area of displacement rotor.
