An access network includes a transport parameter which is used to encapsulate data received from the core network. The core network carries in another transport parameter data which relates to features which are not directly supported by the core network signalling channel. At least some of these data are transferred to the access network transport parameter. The access network signalling channel may be used to interwork two or more different networks. In one example the core network signalling is ISUP and the access network signalling is DSS1.
