PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit, which is formed by a liquid crystal panel and backlight, secures stable backlight luminance without being influenced by any kind of environment in use, is inexpensive, and low-powered. SOLUTION: This unit is constituted from a pulse producing means 2 which produces backlight pulses, a dimming means 6 which dims backlight luminance, a reference voltage source 45 which produces a reference voltage, a temperature detecting means 40 which detects the ambient temperature of the backlight unit, a period selecting means 42 which sets the period of temperature detection by the temperature detecting means 40, and a comparison means 46 which compares the result detected by the temperature detecting means 40 with the voltage level of the reference voltage. And over the period set by the period selecting means 42, the ambient temperature of the display unit is detected to dim the luminance of backlight in accordance with the detected temperature. |
