PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely carry out control such as overspeed control or the like by changing an oscillating width of a search wave or the width of a beam in accordance with a vehicle-to-vehicle distance, a speed or the like so as to detect an obstruction in front of or around a running vehicle. SOLUTION: A search wave transmitting part 2 and an echo wave receiving part 7 are provided in the front part of an instant vehicle A, and the oscillating width of a search wave T transmitted from the transmitting part 2 is set to an oscillating widthθn which causes a narrow searching range, or an oscillating widthθw which causes a wide searching range. A search range setting means sets the oscillating width toθn when the vehicle runs at, for example, a high speed so as to search only for a running vehicle ahead, and sets the oscillating width toθw so as to search for a running vehicle ahead and obstructions around the vehicle. Thereby it is possible to easy detect a running vehicle ahead of the instant vehicle and obstructions around the instant vehicle.
