PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst efficiently decomposing chlorofluorohydrocarbon and having long life and a decomposition method using the catalyst. SOLUTION: In reaction decomposing chlorofluorohydrocarbon.in a gaseous phase in the presence of steam or steam and molecular oxygen, a catalyst containing 300 wtppm or less of alkali metal in the total amt. and consisting of oxide of phosphorus and oxide of at least one element selected from a group consisting of aluminum, boron and alkaline earth metal is used.
