PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accelerate a stepping motor quickly up to a high speed while varying the acceleration to suppress overshoot by employing a quadratic function in the rising waveform of the motor representing the relationship between the rotational speed of the motor and the number of pulses being applied thereto. SOLUTION: A stepping motor 316 can control the amount of rotation according to a provided pulse pattern and a carriage 314 including a unit for picking up an image can be moved to an arbitrary position by controlling the rotating/ stopping position thereof. In this regard, a quadratic function is employed in the rising waveform of the stepping motor 316 representing the relationship between the rotational speed of the motor 316 and the number of pulses being applied thereto. According to the arrangement, the stepping motor 316 can be started smoothly and accelerated quickly while suppressing initial vibration when a target speed is reached.
