Wavefront sensor with microlens array spatially distributed according to the cubature formulae nodes. Specially designed for the modal phase recovery of an unknown front by means of evaluating its modal integrals via various cubatures, especially Albrecht cubatures. It uses a microlens array as a sampling element, situated in a specified substrate such that the centres of its apertures coincide with the nodes of the cubature used. This sensor can be used to obtain the modal coefficients of the front with respect to a separate orthogonal base (in particular, Zernike polynomials) without mutual coupling, avoiding the use of matrix inversion routines and minimizing modelling errors. It is of application for analysing wavefronts, quality control of optical components, active and adaptive optics, in particular for high power laser beam control, adaptive image compensation and post-detection deconvolution. <IMAGE>
