Mechanical component with functional coating

A component or element, which can be subjected to mechanical stress, comprises a substrate (2) bearing an insulating layer (10) and one or more functional layers (20) with sensor properties, the layers (10, 20) consisting of amorphous hydrocarbon, boron nitride or similar material and differing by different material doping and/or different physical treatment. Also claimed are: (i) the production of a component or element which can be subjected to mechanical stress and which consists of a substrate (2) to be provided with a tribological coating; and (ii) an apparatus for producing the above component or element or for carrying out the above process.
