The respiration instrument comprises a closed respiration circulation (3), in which the gases necessary for the respiration are supplied by device of a dosage unit (9), whereby at least the consumed quantity of respiration gas is refilled. A gas conveyance unit (2) with a variable volume is connected with the respiration circulation, by which a predetermined volume is moved into the circulation during a breath-in phase. Devices (14) are provided for detecting a gas volume, moved by the dosage unit into the circulation during the breath-in phase. Second devices (16) form a volume difference between the volume of the conveyance unit and the entered gas volume, and third devices (21) use the volume difference as a new value for adjusting the variable volume of the gas conveyance unit.
