The method involves employing a sample holder (1) in which a random sample (2) is positioned at the centre of a magnetising coil (3). The sample holder (1) is mounted on a shaft (8) normal to the preferred direction of magnetisation for rotation by a drive (9) having an angular position sensor (4) and the assembly is completed by a Helmholtz pick-up coil (5) with magnetic screen (7). A first magnetising pulse generates a signal in the coil (5) and after a rotation through 180 degree a similar pulse produces a second signal. An iterative procedure using variable pulse amplitudes enables accurate determination of remanence.
