<p>A vegetation recognition system (10) for use in the agriculture industry for the detection and growth control of vegetation is mounted along a boom (14) of a spray rig vehicle. The system includes a plurality of sensor units (13) spaced along the boom (14) and a spray monitor unit (11) and several co-ordinating processor units (12). Each unit (11, 12, 13) is connected by a bi-directional communications link so that information may flow electronically between these units. Each sensor unit (13) includes a photodetector that is able to detect the amount of radiance reflected off the ground in the field of view covered by the sensor unit (13). An analogue-to-digital converter and a microprocessor are also located in each sensor unit (13) and are able to convert the radiance detected in the red and infrared channels into electronic signals which are then sent to the local co-ordinating processor unit (12) for that sensor unit (13). This radiance information from each sensor unit (13) is then dynamically processed by an intelligent controller means contained within each of the sensor units (13) which determines a set of reference values against which the radiance information of each sensor unit (13) can be compared so as to determine whether or not any of the sensor units (13) has vegetation in its field to view.</p> |
