The metal encapsulated gas-insulated switchgear enclosure has an earthed metallic housing (3) surrounding the high voltage conductor (4) in which a main switch (38) is interposed with insulator support (36). The incoming side of the main switch (38) is provided with an earthing assembly (1) connected with the housing (3) via a metallic flange (19) whilst the outgoing side has a similar assembly (25) in which the flanged connector (26) is an insulator. The bridging contacts (5) and series connected measuring and control equipment (32) operate either to earth the HV system conductors during out-of-service repair and maintenance or to check contact resistance and wear by injecting constant current DC via the terminals (35,39) and nothing the resultant volt drop via the meter (34).
