1,224,294. Tensioning chains. SEASAFE TRANSPORT AB. 5 Nov., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 54281/69. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] A driving device for applying a tension to chains comprises a guide 9 having a groove 10 along which a chain 11 is guided and a worm screw 1 engageable with the chain adjacent the guide 9, and rotatable to haul the chain through the device. The pitch of the threads 21 of the worm 1 is selected for engagement between the threads and alternate chain links or every fourth link if a two stout thread is used, the lead angle of the threads being small enough to render the screw self-locking when not driven. The wormshaft 13 may further be lockable by a lever actuated device 15. The guide 9 is pivotable outwardly relative to the device frame 5 to facilitate installation of the chain therein. The shaft 13 may be driven either manually through a lever in an aperture 14 or by power means. In a further embodiment, two guides are associated with the one worm to facilitate tensioning of two chains together. |
