A process for winding a web of cotton wadding on a tube in a machine producing reels entails reducing the width of the web being fed on to the tube to a value B1 some time before the end of the winding procedure and for a time interval (I-II) and finally returning it to its original value. Also claimed is the apparatus for producing the reel of wadding according to the process. There is a winding assembly to which the web is fed via calendar rollers and an adjustable fleece guide mounted ahead of these to act on the width (B) of the web being fed to the rollers. A controller installed with a suitable program adjusts the fleece guide in response to the wound-on metres indicated by a sensor signal to reduce the web width and after another count of wound-on metres to return the guide to its original position. The values are chosen so that when winding is finished and before the reel is transferred the web separation point (AR) and the point at which the original width is obtained coincide.
