FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to synthesis of quaternary ammonium compounds, in part, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropylmethylammonium chloride. Method involves mixing trimethylamine, epichlorohydrin and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane at 18-45 C. Mixture is kept at indicated temperature for 12-24 h and precipitate of the end product is separated. Mother liquor is distilled and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and formed trichloroethylene are isolated. The latter is used partially for washing out the end product precipitate and partially obtained as a commercial product. Synthesized product is used for modifying monomers and polymers, in part, starch for flocculants, surface-active substances, ion-exchange resins, antiseptics and other materials producing. EFFECT: improved method of synthesis.
