A measurement process and an embodiment of a device are disclosed, for example for determining by ultrasonic waves the density of liquids contained or transported in containers or tankers. An ultrasonic probe (3) inserted into the container consists of an ultra-sound conducting tube (9) which contains at its lower end a first ultrasonic sensor (5) for measuring the filling level and a second ultrasonic sensor (7) for measuring the distance from the container bottom (13). The effective filling level is calculated from these two measurement values and the filling volume from the tank curve. Special chemical or technical characteristic parameters (such as concentration, mixtures, dilution, fat content or the like) are determined from the known density values of a substance and from any detected deviations, after taking into consideration the prevailing temperature.
