An electrode arrangement for an electrical impedance tomography system comprises a plurality of electrodes in an array mounted in a support medium for supporting t he electrodes adjacent a surface of a volume to be imaged, for example the thorax or another b ody part, a pipeline, the ground, and so on. The electrodes are disposed in two groups, the arrangement being such that, in use, one group will be closer to the surface than the other group. The support medium may have anisotropic conductivity, its conductivity in a directio n that, in use, is normal to the surface, being significantly greater than a conductivity in a d irection that, in use, is parallel to the surface. The support medium may be rigid, fixing the ele ctrodes fixed spatially relative to each other, and a pliable interface medium be provided to fit between the rigid support and the surface. Such support medium will be conductive, so as to connect the electrodes electrically to the surface, and pliable so as to conform to variatio ns in the relief of the surface.
