A collapsible, rotatable tyre building drum comprises larger and smaller segment assemblies 92, 94 slidably mounted on pins 164, secured in circumferentially spaced manner around cones 128, 136, for radial movement upon axial movement of the cones relative to the drive-shaft 96. Alternate pins are disposed at an angle to the shaft axis different from that of the remaining pins so that the assemblies 94 move radially inwardly before the others and vice versa. As shown, pinion gears 112, 114 are in mesh with parallel racks 124, 126 connected respectively to cones 128, 136 whereby axial movement of a reciprocable drive member 140 fixed to cone 136 causes movement of the cones towards or away from one another. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), movement of the cones is effected by rotation of a screw (16) having oppositely threaded portions (24, 26) in engagement with oppositely disposed nuts (28, 30) each operatively connected to a cone. |
