PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an ingredient to be used in a liquid crystal device and suitable for improving various properties such as quick responsiveness and orienting property when blended in a ferroelectric composition. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by formula I (Y<1> and Y<2> are each single bond, O, CO, etc.; R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-24C alkyl; Ar is 1,4- phenylene, 4,4'-biphenylene, etc.; A is CH2 CO, COCH2 , etc.), e.g. (S)-2- hydroxy-6-(2'-methyl-butyloxy)naphthalene. When the group A in formula I is CH2 CO, the compound of formula I is produced, e.g. by condensing a carboxylic acid of formula II with a hydroxy compound of formula III in the presence of a dehydrating condensation agent, e.g. N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and a catalyst, e.g. 4-N,N-dimethylaminopyridine. |
