摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal display excellent in response time and steepness by using a nematic liq. crystal mixture contg. a combination of an ester compd. with an alkenyl compd. SOLUTION: A nematic liq. crystal mixture used here contains 20-90wt.% liq. crystal component contg. at least one compd. having a dielectric anisotropy higher than +1.5 and represented by formula I (wherein R<a> is a 1-12C alkyl; L is H or F; and (r) is 0 or 1), 10-65wt.% liq. crystal component contg. at least one compd. having a dielectric anisotropy of -1.5 to +1.5 and represented by formula II (wherein R<b> is a 2-12C alkyl; R<c> is F, a 1-6C alkyl, or alkoxy; each of the groups represented by formulas III is independently one of the groups represented by formulas IV; (l) is 0 or 1; and L<1> and L<2> are each H or F), 0-20wt.% liq. crystal component comprising at least one compd. having a dielectric anisotropy of -1.5 or lower, and an optically active component in such an amt. that the ratio of the layer thickness to the natural pitch of a chiral nematic liq. crystal mixture is about 0.2-1.3.
