PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lactic ester useful as e.g. a solvent for coating materials, raw material for medicines, etc., in high yield by a new method without the need of any cooling medium an equipment through suppressing formic ester production. SOLUTION: When this lactic ester of the formula CH3 (OH)COOR (R is a 1-8C alkyl) is produced by reaction between lactamide and a formic ester, components lower in boiling point than the lactic ester are recovered from the reaction liquor by distillation under normal or higher pressures. The recovering condition in this case is represented by the relationship: [residence time](h)×[bottom temperature -126]( deg.C)<16. Thereby, the objective lactic ester is obtained more economically and effectively.
