PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a gear shift lag when an automatic transmission is shifted from a non-running range to a running range. SOLUTION: A control device for an internal combustion engine with an automatic transmission is formed such that an automatic transmission to perform shifting to a running range and a non-running range is coupled to an internal combustion engine the output of which is controlled along with shifting of a range by the automatic transmission. The control device comprises a range detecting means (a step 6) to detect the shift of the automatic transmission from a non-running range to a running range; and an output control means (a step 16) to vary the output of the internal combustion engine in the vicinity of the starting point of time of an inertial phase of a shift along with a shift from a non-running range detected by the range detecting means (a step 6) to a running range.
