TREATMENT OF DECAYABLE ORGANIC MATTER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To treat decayable org. matter even when the activity of quicklime is reduced by mixing the org. matter with quicklime and <1 equiv. acid based on 1 equiv. of the quicklime and decomposing the org. matter by stirring under an alkali condition. SOLUTION: An acid is fed from an acid tank 1 into an acid weighing tank 3 and the concn. of the acid is regulated to a prescribed value by feeding diluting water through a diluting water pipe 2. Decayable org. matter and quicklime are put in a reaction tank 4 through a decayable org. matter feeding pipe 5 and a quicklime putting hole 4a. The acid is then fed from the tank 3 by <1 equiv. per 1 equiv. of the quicklime and they are stirred with a stirring blade 4d. The alkali decomposition reaction of the decayable org. matter is initiated by the quicklime. The progress of the reaction is stopped when the activity of the quicklime is reduced. A calcium hydroxide coating film formed on the surface of the quicklime is, however, removed by the action of the acid, sudden hydration reaction takes place and the alkali decomposition reaction is succeeded or accelerated.
