PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage to a catalyst due to high thermal load and arrange a converter near an engine by connecting the wall of a converter, which performs radiative exchange with the end of the catalyst, to at least one heat sink. SOLUTION: A converter with an air-heat exchanger 7 arranged at the end and an exhaust gas inlet tube 2 provided at the side has a converter casing 1 incorporated with a monolith catalyst 4. The air-heat exchanger 7 facing the inflow plane 5 of the catalyst 4 performs radiative exchange, not being substantially disturbed, to cool the inflow plane 5 of the catalyst 4. The monolith catalyst 2 is preferably formed into a disc shape with a largest possible sectional area to improve its heat radiation. As a heat exchanger, a water-heat exchanger instead of the air-heat exchanger can be used. The water-heat exchanger, if used, must be piped and connected to a cooling circuit existing in a vehicle. |
