PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium of high durability which is suitable for high density recording. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic base layer and a magnetic layer on a flexible nonmagnetic supporting body. The magnetic layer contains a ferromagnetic metal powder having >=40m<2> /g specific surface area measured by BET method, alumina particles having 0.4 to 0.8μm average particle size, carbon black and binder. The proportion of the area of alumina particles exposed on the surface of the magnetic layer is 0.20 to 3.0%.
